MK1 Season 1 to reveal what real Scorpion is up to via Invasion mode
Do you want to know what’s going on with the ‘real’ Scorpion in the new Mortal Kombat 1 timeline? Well, you’re not alone – and it sounds like we’re about to find out. MK1 fans know that Scorpion isn’t who you think he would be in Mortal Kombat 1, but where does that leave Hanzo Hasashi? In the build-up to the release of what could be one of the best fighting games of the year, the man traditionally behind the yellow mask hasn’t really come up – at all. Now, though, we know a little more about what happened to the real Scorpion in Mortal Kombat 1, and it’s a sad story.
On the eve of the Mortal Kombat 1 release date, NetherRealm Studios is diving into more details on some of the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1 fighters and Mortal Kombat 1 Kameos through a new KombatKast stream. Alongside offering some fresh Reiko and Shang Tsung gameplay for you to enjoy, this fourth KombatKast also highlights more details on MK1 Invasions – and the Season 1 content players can expect to enjoy soon. Sure, it still looks like Mario Party, but with more blood and guts. However, it’s also going to explore what Hanzo Hasashi is up to in this timeline of events. Well, sort of.
As you can hear for yourself at around the 16-minute mark of the KombatKast stream in question, Season 1’s Invasion is going to be all about Hanzo Hasashi. While this initial reveal doesn’t give us a lot to go on, lead systems designer Derek Kirtzic does share that this will be just one of several seasonal invading bosses players will come up against.
While this does reveal that this iteration of Hanzo Hasashi is likely from another universe, it does also seemingly confirm that this story should wrap itself up in just a season. So, you won’t have to wait too long to find out the full story – hopefully.
That’s not all, though. This KombatKast offers us up a little bit more about Hanzo Hasashi and his story. In fact, it actually shares the entire Season 1 introductory cinematic – a short “season openener” that sets the scene for the first season of Invasions and the narrative linking all the rotating seasonal content you’ll be met with together.
Titled “The Spectre”, this iteration of Scorpion is heartbroken and hell-bent on revenge – in a strange sort of way – after losing his wife and son to Quan-Chi. This is something of a constant throughout the multiverse, both in timelines prior to Mortal Kombat 1 and Mortal Kombat 1’s timeline itself. As explained by Liu Kang in a voice-over, “consumed by grief, he searched [the timelines] to find another Harumi (his wife) with whom he could rebuild his family”. Sounds romantic, right?
Well, in every timeline he visited, he found that he was just too late to save Harumi from death – except one. In the new Mortal Kombat 1 timeline, Harumi is alive and well – and married to Kuai Liang, the current Scorpion. This didn’t sit too well with Hanzo Hasashi, who found himself overcome with rage, vowing to burn the entire timeline with Harumi in it. If he can’t have her, no one can. Yeah, maybe not quite as romantic as it first sounded.
In the same way MK1’s Jean-Claude Van Damme skin pays homage to a classic action movie, this first seasonal story seems to pay homage to quite-possibly the most toxic relationship ever conceived. Sure, we all like Hanzo Hasashi, but we’re certainly not going to feel bad about using one or two Mortal Kombat 1 fatalities on him – if we get the chance.
Mortal Kombat 1 is just the first of several incredible upcoming Xbox games and upcoming PS5 games coming out before 2024. If you’re interested in playing any of them, you should look into picking up one of the best Xbox expansion cards here or one of the best PS5 SSDs right here. This isn’t a small download, and we’re pretty sure the others won’t be either.
